Graphite is not automatically lighter, softer or better. Steel is not automatically more accurate. The right iron shaft is the combination of weight, flex and response that lets you deliver the head consistently without forcing the swing.
Start with weight—not the logo
Weight is often the first difference a golfer notices. A lighter build can make speed and launch easier for some players, while a heavier build can improve awareness and timing for others. Neither response is universal.
Ferro offers weights from 60 grams through 130 grams across its shaft menu. That wide range matters more than a simple steel-versus-graphite label.
Do not pay for an upgrade until its weight and response produce a measurable or clearly repeatable benefit for your swing.
The two Ferro steel options
KBS Tour is the stock chrome-finish steel option and is included in the base set price. It is offered at 110g Regular, 120g Stiff and 130g X-Stiff. It is the sensible default for golfers who already perform well in a traditional steel weight range.
KBS $-Taper uses a black PVD finish and is offered in the same three weight and flex combinations. Its $105 set upcharge does not make it objectively better than KBS Tour. It buys a different shaft profile and finish; it only earns its place if the golfer prefers the resulting delivery, flight and feel.
Chrome steel · 110g R · 120g S · 130g X · included.
Black PVD steel · 110g R · 120g S · 130g X · +$105 per set.
The two Ferro graphite options
KBS TGI Graphite creates the lightest path in the Ferro matrix, beginning at 60g Regular and moving through 80g Stiff, 100g X-Stiff and 110g X-Stiff+. It can make sense for a golfer seeking less total shaft mass or a distinctly different response from steel.
Fujikura AXIOM Graphite occupies heavier graphite ranges: 95g in Regular or Stiff, 105g in Stiff or X-Stiff, and 125g in Stiff or X-Stiff. It shows why graphite should not be treated as a synonym for lightweight. Its $455 set upcharge is significant and should be justified by fit—not prestige.
60g R · 80g S · 100g X · 110g X+ · +$315 per set.
95g R/S · 105g S/X · 125g S/X · +$455 per set.
The honest recommendation
Choose the least expensive shaft that gives you the best combination of centered contact, predictable start direction, playable flight and comfortable effort. Sometimes that will be the included KBS Tour. Sometimes graphite will be worth the difference.
A shaft cannot correct every swing issue, and a premium price cannot guarantee a better result. Confirm the build against your actual delivery before ordering whenever a fitting is available.
