Your best shot tells you what a club can do. Your ordinary shots tell you whether it belongs in your bag. Once your custom Ferro test 7-iron arrives, use a few focused sessions to decide whether the head, shaft and specifications work for your game before ordering the remaining six irons.
Start with a fair comparison
Bring your current 7-iron and warm up before comparing. Use the same type of golf ball, aim at the same target and alternate between clubs in short groups. Try to keep the lie and conditions similar so the comparison is useful.
Record the loft and length of both clubs if you know them. Two clubs marked “7” can have different specifications, so extra distance alone does not establish which one is the better fit. Start with normal swings rather than trying to produce a personal-best shot.
Look at the whole group of shots
As a starting exercise, hit ten shots with each club after warming up. Keep the ordinary misses in your notes. If a shot is interrupted or a measurement clearly fails, mark it separately rather than quietly deleting every poor result.
Without a launch monitor, use a consistent target and note where shots land. With one, compare carry distance and the spread of the shots. Repeat the exercise on another day before drawing a firm conclusion.
What distance can you reasonably plan around? Look at your usual carry and the short-to-long spread, rather than only the longest shot.
Do your shots finish in a useful group? Note your common miss and whether it remains manageable.
Where are you contacting the face, and can you tell when contact changes? Note how comfortable the club feels through the swing.
Take it onto grass
A range session is a starting point. When practice access and course rules allow, try the club from fairway lies and light rough. Pay attention to how it enters and leaves the turf, and whether you can make your normal swing comfortably.
On the course, choose a sensible target and use the club as you normally would. Observe the flight, landing point and how the ball behaves after landing. Note wind, slope and green firmness so a single result does not carry too much weight.
Judge the model against your priorities
If you chose the Ferro MC for control and direct feedback, ask whether you can produce your intended flight without having to manufacture a perfect swing. If you chose the Ferro CB for stability and forgiveness, pay particular attention to what happens on your normal off-center strikes.
Testing one model can tell you whether it suits you; it cannot prove how the other model would perform for your swing. If the results leave you uncertain, discuss your notes with Ferro or a fitter before committing to the full set.
Make a short decision checklist
After each session, write down your typical carry, common miss, contact pattern and one sentence about comfort and confidence. Consistent observations across sessions are more useful than a single memorable shot.
The club gives you a predictable result, feels comfortable and does what you need from a 7-iron.
You like the head but repeatedly struggle with contact, direction or comfort. Review the shaft and build specifications with Ferro or a fitter before ordering more clubs.
The results are inconsistent or you do not prefer it to your current club. Gather more evidence before committing.
A good test should help you make a clear decision—even when that decision is to wait.
